Although the Mancos High School boys basketball team experienced some rocky moments during its road contest against Ridgway High School on Tuesday, the Bluejays’ superior talent and balanced scoring were more than enough to carry them to a 63-42 victory.
Among the leading scorers for Mancos, ranked No. 8 in the latest www.chsaanow.com Class 2A basketball poll, were sophomore Evan Sehnert, who scored 18 points, and senior Anthony Medina, who scored 16.
Two other Bluejays also scored in double figures, as sophomore Connor Showalter knocked down two 3-pointers and scored 12 points, and senior Caden Showalter scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Caden Showalter’s double-double was the 50th of his storied high school career, and the Mancos senior is now just three double-doubles away from tying the Colorado state record for career double-doubles.
With the win, the Bluejays improved their record to 11-3 overall and 5-1 in the SJBL. Mancos currently sits second in the SJBL standings behind perennial league powerhouse Ignacio, which defeated the Bluejays earlier this season.
After facing off against Telluride at home on Friday, Mancos will prepare to host archrival Dolores High School on Feb. 11 for a rematch of a contest that the Bluejays won 64-26 earlier this season.
