A winter weather advisory will take effect 5 p.m. Wednesday as an incoming snowstorm could drop up to a foot of new snow in the high country of the San Juan Mountains.

The National Weather Service says the storm could affect parts of eastern Utah and Southwest Colorado, including Silverton, Hesperus, Rico, Ridgway and Monticello.

The winter weather advisory is in effect for the areas until 5 p.m. Thursday.

During this time, elevations above 8,500 feet could see 6 to 10 inches of new snow, with some areas getting a foot of snow.

The NWS says travel could be very difficult, especially on mountain passes.

In Durango, precipitation will mostly fall as rain, starting sometime Wednesday afternoon. The overnight low Wednesday into Thursday night is around 32 degrees, though the NWS expects little to no snow accumulation in town.

The chance for rain continues into Thursday afternoon. The storm is expected to leave the region by Thursday night.

The next chance for snow, according to the NWS, is late Saturday night and early Sunday.
