The sun was shining, the air was brisk and yet, the day was one that members of the Montezuma-Cortez High School Panthers soccer team would probably like to forget.
Playing on the road against the Durango Demons on Tuesday, Oct. 8, the Panthers were absolutely dismantled, losing 12-0 in a game that turned out to be the team’s worst of the season.
The defeat was especially disappointing considering the fact that the Panthers lost a tightly contested 1-0 contest to the Demons just over one week ago.
From start to finish, the Demon’s offense pushed the pace as forwards consistently broke, unabated, into Cortez territory to fire shots on Panthers’ goalie Bridger Brenner.
Durango goalkeeper Patrick Leach even managed to get in on the scoring action, firing a penalty kick past Brenner to put the Demons ahead, 6-0.
With the loss, the Panthers fell to 1-12 on the season and 0-8 in the Southwest League. Meanwhile, the Demons improved to 6-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the League.
Looking to close out their season on a positive note, the Panthers will return to action this weekend at home against Grand Junction Central (Oct. 11) and Fruita Monument (Oct. 12).
