A 54-year-old La Plata County man was arrested Friday after allegedly exposing himself to a nurse at Mercy Regional Medical Center.

Hatfield

According to an arrest affidavit filed by the Durango Police Department, officers were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. Friday to Mercy, 1010 Three Springs Blvd.

Upon arriving, officers were met by a nurse who said Kevin Claude Hatfield had exposed himself to her.

The nurse told authorities that Hatfield was in a room for treatment when he called for her to come into the room. Hatfield was standing in the doorway when he asked the nurse, “What’s the update?” the arrest affidavit says.

“(The nurse) replied that they were still trying to figure it out, and Hatfield said, ‘Excuse me?’ as he lifted his gown, exposing his unclothed lower half (to the nurse), who attempted to shield her vision and look away,” the investigating officer wrote in his report.

A security guard for Mercy witnessed the incident, police records show, who saw Hatfield “lift his gown and intentionally expose himself” to the nurse.

Hatfield was placed into custody around 9 p.m. and was taken to the La Plata County Jail on suspicion of indecent exposure.

Durango Police Cmdr. Jacob Dunlop did not have additional information about the incident Monday afternoon.

District Attorney Christian Champagne said an indecent exposure conviction is a Class 1 misdemeanor, which can hold a penalty of six to 18 months in county jail, fines of $500 to $5,000 and possible probation.

Champagne said indecent exposure is considered to be a sex offense, and anyone convicted would have to register as a sex offender, enroll in a sex offender probation program and receive possible treatment.

Records from the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office show Hatfield was the listed agent of Bayfield-based KCH Construction LLC, but the company has been delinquent since June 2017.

According to Dunlop, Hatfield was in custody as of 3 p.m. Monday. He is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 3.

A spokeswoman with Mercy declined to comment.
