Although the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls’ softball team continues to improve, wins remain elusive.
Playing a doubleheader on the road against the Palisade High School Bulldogs on Friday, Sept. 20, the Panthers were defeated by scores of 4-1 and 13-8.
Highlighting the Panthers’ performances against the Bulldogs was a two-run home run by sophomore Tayla Topaha, which contributed to the Panthers’ eight-run scoring outburst in the doubleheader’s second game.
Hoping to continue their solid hitting, the Panthers next traveled to Delta to compete in a doubleheader against the Delta High School on Saturday, Sept. 21.
Although the Panthers managed to score four runs in their first game against Delta, five errors were too much to overcome as M-CHS lost 14-4.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Panthers managed only four hits off Delta pitcher Keilee Womack before eventually losing 10-0.
“The girls are still improving,” said Panthers’ head coach Brett Martin regarding his team’s performance over the weekend. “Our on-base percentages are getting higher. We are still making too many errors though.”
With their season record now at 0-13, the Panthers will hit the practice field before playing a doubleheader at home against Rifle on Friday, Sept. 27, and a doubleheader at home against Eagle Valley on Saturday, Sept. 28.
