Opening the season on Aug. 29 in Pagosa Springs, the Montezuma-Cortez High School Panthers volleyball team did what they had to do. They got a win.
Showing signs of early season rust, as well as some opening-match nerves, the Panthers bested the Pirates in four sets, winning by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 26-24 and 25-14.
Although head coach Barbara Chappell was pleased that her team came away victorious, she was quick to point out that the Panthers’ play left much to be desired.
“It wasn’t our best game, but we managed to get the job done,” said Chappell. “We hit out the back a lot. The girls were nervous.”
Even with the early-season nerves, however, several players made positive contributions in the win. Junior outside hitter Naomi Pennecoose recorded 19 kills and 14 digs while senior middle hitter Mikkel Waltman had 7 kills, 10 digs and 1 block.
Other players commended by Chappell for their solid play included sophomores Kristin Pierce and Laurel Chappell.
“(Pierce) is really coming along,” explained Chappell. “Laurel made some good decisions. At crucial times, she had some great offensive tips.”
After enjoying a breather over Labor Day weekend, the Panthers will resume action on Sept. 3 at home against Bayfield. The varsity match versus the Bobcats is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
