M-CHS volleyball team off to a hot start

Four matches into its season, the Montezuma-Cortez High School volleyball team has played impressively while picking up victories in three of its four matches.

The Lady Panthers’ latest win came on the road against Bloomfield High School on Sept. 13 by a score of 25-22, 25-19, 25-23.

Leading the way for M-CHS in the often-competitive match was junior Myka Glover, who hammered down 16 kills and was credited with six digs. Sophomore Avery Wright was credited with nine kills and 14 digs, and junior Leigha Comisky led the team in assists with 41.

Three days before their straight-set victory over Bloomfield, the Lady Panthers played at home for the first time this season and gave their fans plenty of highlights to cheer about during a hotly contested 25-22, 21-25, 24-26, 25-14, 15-8 loss to Alamosa High School.

Glover led the Lady Panthers offensively with 19 kills, and Wright was credited with eight kills, a match-best five blocks and 13 digs. Juniors Devon McHenry and Amber Wood were credited with 11 digs each, and Comisky had 35 assists.

M-CHS’ first victory of the season came on the road against Dolores High School by a score of 25-18, 25-13, 25-11. Glover led the Lady Panthers in kills with 12, McHenry led M-CHS in digs with five, and Comisky was credited with 26 assists.

After its victory over Dolores High School, the Lady Panthers hit the road to face Aztec High School on Sept. 12 and walked away with a convincing 25-12, 25-15, 25-17 win. Glover notched a match-best 16 kills for M-CHS, and Wood was credited with a team-high six aces and nine digs.

Now 3-1 overall and 0-1 in the Intermountain League, M-CHS will return to practice before hitting the road to face off against Centauri and Alamosa on Saturday.
