M-CHS sophomore Taiah Wilson winds up for a pitch earlier this week. Wilson has pitched in each of M-CHS’ previous six games.

Playing on familiar fields in Southwest Colorado, the Montezuma-Cortez High School softball team wrapped its most impressive weeklong stretch in at least a decade with a 20-6 road victory over Durango on Sept. 17.

Among the highlights of the rivalry’s contest was a 10n-run explosion by the Lady Panthers offense in the top of the fourth inning that put M-CHS ahead 18-2 and all but guaranteed the team’s five-inning mercy-rule victory.

Before its victory over Durango, M-CHS split a home doubleheader on Sept. 14 against Cedaredge High School, which entered the contests with a 7-3 record overall. M-CHS won the opening game of the doubleheader, 10-9, before dropping the second game, 11-6.

M-CHS picked up the first two wins of its impressive weeklong stretch at home against Meeker High School on Sept. 13 by scores of 17-3 and 28-13.

Although complete statistics were not available for any of the week’s games, head coach Brittney Whiteman noted that sophomore Taiah Wilson started each of the past six games on the mound for M-CHS.

Now 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the Class 3A District 5 League, M-CHS has begun to gain recognition in statewide prep polls. The Lady Panthers are currently ranked eighth in the RPI poll posted on www.chsaanow.com and are just outside the Top 10 in the media poll compiled by www.chsaanow.com

Next up for M-CHS will be a home doubleheader on Sept. 20 against a tough Delta High School squad that has amassed a 3-0 record in the Class 3A District 5 League this season.
