La Plata County commissioners Tuesday approved a Class 2 land-use permit for a new storage facility near Ignacio.

A proposed 169-unit storage facility near Ignacio was given the green light Tuesday.

La Plata County commissioners unanimously approved a Class 2 land-use permit for the facility that is expected to have a storage capacity of 40,000 square feet. The new business is located at 2098 Highway 151, about 2 miles east of Ignacio, on an estimated 40 acres.

Daniel Murray with the La Plata County Planning Department said the property used to have a single-family residence, but it was removed and the land is now vacant.

Murray said the business will not have any office or employees on-site. He said the closest home is about 900 feet away. No one spoke Tuesday during the public comment period for the proposed project.

“It’s a very remote area,” Murray said.

The La Plata County Planning Commission recommended the project be approved at its June 27 meeting. County staff also recommended approval.

Murray said the business will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to county records, the owner of the business is Don Gosney, who was not in attendance Tuesday. Brian Kimmel with Southwest Land Services, representing the project, said the business will function as a standard storage facility.
