“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”

Mr. Rogers’ words keep coming back to me as I continue on my road to recovery. I was involved in a near fatal auto accident toward the end of January and I encountered many caring helpers in the days and weeks that followed.

To the first responders, firefighters, police, and EMTs at the scene, I give thanks.

To the doctors and nurses at Southwest Memorial Hospital who stabilized me, did X-rays and CT scans and prepared me for transport to St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, thank you.

I am grateful to the helicopter crew, the ICU trauma team at St. Mary’s and medical personnel who provided round-the-clock care.

Thank you to the PTs, OTs and speech therapists who aided in my rehabilitation with your skill and encouragement.

I appreciate our neighbors and friends who picked up the paper, shoveled the snow and kept me in their thoughts and prayers.

I am grateful to the city Of Cortez, Mayor Karen Sheek and City Council for the flowers, cards and words of encouragement.

And finally, I am eternally thankful to my loving wife, Gail, for staying with me during all those dark days and for being a dedicated, tireless and supportive caregiver.
