Mancos mayor Rachel Simbeck attempts to cut the ribbon with garden shears while trustee Reneata Collins cuts with a pair of scissors to formally open the Mesa Street pedestrian bridge at a dedication ceremony on June 5.

The final touches on the Mesa Street pedestrian bridge have been completed with the landscaping recently finished and a dedication ceremony Wednesday, June 5.

Mayor Rachel Simbeck recapped the history of the bridge, that began with the Mancos school district, the Mancos Public Library and town all chipping in $1,500 for the flood plain study necessary to satisfy the Colorado Department of Transportation. The final $200,000 cost was funded mostly by an enhancement grant through CDOT for $119,228 with the remainder picked up by Montezuma County, the Ballantine Foundation and the town of Mancos in general and conservation trust funds.

The bridge provides a safe and beautiful passage across the Mancos River to the library, said Simbeck, and is part of the master trails plan for the town of Mancos.
