On May 13, Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project and Philip and Vivienne Kenyon were presented with an Endangered Places Progress Award by Colorado Preservation Inc. at the 2019 Dana Crawford and State Honor Awards for the progress made to restore the historic Gold Medal Orchard.
In 2015, this historic site became the first cultural landscape to be listed by CPI as one of Colorado’s Most Endangered Places. The Kenyons work with MORP to restore the site to its former glory to pass down to their children. Since first being listed as threatened in 2015, MORP has grafted hundreds of varieties of endangered apples from historic Colorado orchards to preserve in the orchard. To date, 240 trees have been planted, with plans for 400 others.
The Kenyons and MORP share the vision for these young trees of old genetics to reach their prime and grow for another 100 years.
