Legion, VFW to honor war dead

Ute Mountain American Legion Post 75 invites the public to join in observing Memorial Day at several events to be held on Monday, May 27:

6 a.m., Cortez Cemetery: Legion Honor Guard, dedication, rifle-team salute, rendering of taps, and the playing of bagpipes by Jim Lynch.

7 a.m., American Legion Hall, 320 N. Harrison: Honor Guard ceremony followed by breakfast for veterans, their families and the public. All donations collected for breakfast will go to the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans Assistance and Relief Fund.

9:30 a.m., Dolores Community Center, 400 Riverside: Military honors by the Honor Guard, including the dropping of a wreath into the river in tribute to those lost at sea.

11 a.m., Rico Cemetery: Honor Guard ceremony.

These events and ceremonies have been an annual tradition of Ute Mountain American Legion Post 75 and the Ladies Auxiliary for more than 60 years. All are welcome.

The Montezuma County VFW Post and Ladies Auxiliary No. 5231 will be holding a series of activities over the Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., members will be sharing Buddy Poppies at the Cortez Walmart and the Cortez City Market stores.

On Sunday, both the Post and Auxiliary will be placing flags on the graves of their deceased members and other veterans at the local cemeteries.

On Monday, May 27, they will be posting the flags on the streets of Mancos and Dolores beginning at 6 a.m.

At 8:30 a.m., the Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a breakfast at the Post Home in Mancos, 135 W. Grand, for all veterans and members of the community.

Donations from the breakfast will be used for the Ladies Veterans and Family Support Program.

After breakfast, members of the Post and Auxiliary will be posting the Avenue of Flags at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Mancos with the memorial service following at Cedar Grove Cemetery at noon.
