It’s not about you and not about Walmart

To Mr. Ortego and all Walmart customers, you are all valued (“I prefer businesses that think I’m honest,” April 18).

Yet times have changed, we have TSA at the airports, metal detectors in schools and government buildings, all to prevent that one rogue individual from committing a crime or harming others. These people have ruined life as we knew it for all, making security a bigger issue than ever.

Every store measures the amount of security it needs with the losses it incurs to manage profit and product cost. Please consider that the largest stores in Cortez probably don’t do near the dollar volume in a month that Walmart does in one day.

You see, it is not about trust or knowing your neighbors, going to church or functions with friends and family; it is about ensuring that there are items on the shelf for you buy with your hard-earned money. The security is to prevent those that do not value your efforts and choose to shortcut the process and get their items for free.

Theft is one of the greatest problems a store faces; and without a little security inconvenience, no business could stay open.

It is up to all of us to confront those who believe it is theirs for the taking. Otherwise, why not just leave your home and garage wide open?
