The American Red Cross of Western Colorado will hold a Sound the Alarm event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 11, in Cortez, at Cortez Fire Department, 23 N. Washington St., to install free smoke alarms in local homes and will be seeking local volunteer and community support.

Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event in Cortez will have volunteers canvassing neighborhoods to install free smoke alarms and help families create home fire escape plans.

The event is sponsored by the American Red Cross of Western Colorado and community partners. Red Cross representatives will provide details about the home fire safety and smoke alarm installation event in Cortez and an update on the progress of the Home Fire Campaign, which the Red Cross launched in 2014 to reduce fire deaths and injuries with partners.

So far, the campaign has reached more than 1.7 million people and saved more than 500 lives nationwide. In Western and Southwestern Colorado, the Red Cross and local partners have installed 4,300 free smoke alarms.
