Winter brings plentiful snow, visitors

Another beautiful day to follow a somewhat significant snowstorm. Snow is quickly melting off the rooftops, and our hardworking town maintenance man has been out and about making the rounds, clearing the roads. I guesstimate the amount of snow from this week and last week totals about 12 inches. Every little bit adds up for the beautiful summer to come. No matter how “over” winter I am, the reminder of “Oh yeah, this is actually our spring” is clearly on my mind!

Rico had its share of visitors this past week. A good friend of our family, Randy Ford, all the way from Round Rock, Texas, was travelling through on business and decided to take a few fun days to enjoy the snow, and also the slopes of Telluride. It had actually snowed a couple of inches the day before we left, so needless to say, we really enjoyed the skiing. The not-so-great part of his trip was the lack of four-wheel drive; as Randy was making his departure from our house, he managed to get stuck trying to turn around. After a little effort, he was free and on his way to Albuquerque, N.M., for work, and no more snow! (Note to Randy: “positive traction” on a Tahoe might help a little, but not when turning around in Rico!) Randy usually graces us with his presence during the fall hunting season. There’s not nearly the amount of white inconvenience on the roads then!

Also visiting were some of our favorite locals, Tara and Mark Allen, and Mark’s sister Wendy Allen Kettler from East Grand Rapids, Mich. I believe it was last year that Wendy and a friend were here visiting and celebrated her 40th birthday. Surely she will enjoy her stay with family and love every minute of play time with niece Piper.

On Saturday, March 12, our own Marilyn and Gerry Griebel will host a slideshow for our community to enjoy of their wonderful trip to India. There will be finger food provided and a brilliant look at the more indigenous tribes. Accompanying Marilyn and Gerry on the trip was their son Collin. Please take time to share their experiences and gracious company at 6 p.m. at the Rico Community Church.

Another friendly reminder about the Rico Elementary children’s art show being held at the Rico Hotel on Thursday, March 24. Make your reservations soon for the Celebrity Chef Night that evening with our own lovely drama teacher Barbara Betts and her famous chili rellenos. Half of the proceeds from the evening’s dinner will be given to the school. Let’s all remember to get out and support our kids and their wonderful talent and love for art. The evening’s events begin around 5 p.m. Hope to see you there! Don’t forget your checkbooks for this great fundraiser!
