One Book Colorado will give a total of 75,000 free books to 4-year-olds to promote literacy across the state.

“Penguinaut!” – written by Marcie Colleen and illustrated by Emma Yarlett – will be available in English and Spanish through April 22 .

One Book Colorado is a privately funded program that is a collaboration between the Colorado Lt. Governor’s Office, the Colorado Department of Education, the Denver Preschool Program and military libraries statewide.

The program comes from the idea that providing children with access to books promotes early literacy skills and helps families serve as their children’s first and most important teachers.

The Cortez Public Library, Durango Public Library, Pine River Library and Ignacio Community Library are pickup locations.

The Cortez Public Library also announced this week that its annual Summer Reading Program will have the theme “A Universe of Stories.”

For more information, call the Cortez library, 202 N. Park St., at 970-565-8117 or visit www.onebookcolorado.org.
