If I have learned anything in the first few weeks as the editor of the Mancos Times, it is that the science students coming out of Mancos are impressive to say the least. Four students went to the state science fair recently and all four came back with awards.

But perhaps the most impressive was Easton LaChappelle, who actually got to meet the president of the United States because of his science fair project. He was invited to the White House Science Fair on Monday. See the front page story today.

Way to go, Easton.

The Kentucky Derby has always been a favorite of mine, and I was thrilled to find out that the ladies at the Columbine will host a Kentucky Derby party this year. How fun! They even have a hat contest as they root for their favorite horse. Good times!

There are a few volunteer projects coming up that are a great way to give back to the community. First, starting at Boyle Park at 9 a.m. this weekend, you can help plant trees in the areas devastated by the Weber Fire and the following weekend you can help landscape the entrance into Mancos. All excellent opportunities to give back to the community.
