The mountain hamlet of Rico is showing good snowpack this winter.

A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight tonight until noon Sunday in much of Southwest Colorado and southeast Utah, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow is expected to be heavy at times, with 8 to 16 inches forecast for the southern San Juan Mountains, and up to 24 inches at higher elevations. Winds are expected to reach 40 mph, causing blizzard conditions and decreased visibility.

The snow warning extends from eastern Dolores County through northeastern Montezuma County and across San Juan, La Plata and Archuleta counties. The heaviest snowfall is expected Saturday afternoon and evening, the weather service said, and travel could be difficult through mountain passes.

In central and western Montezuma County, a mix of rain and snow is expected to begin after midnight Friday and continue through Sunday, depending on temperatures. Snowfall is expected during the mornings and evenings, with rain after 11 a.m. Less than an inch of accumulated snow is expected.

Temperatures Saturday and Sunday are expected to range from a low of 29 to a high of 42 degrees.

In Utah, the warning extends from Moab south to Monticello and east to the Colorado state line.
