Putting forth their finest defensive effort this season, the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls’ basketball team scored a 48-17 road victory over Dolores High School on Jan. 29.

Among the keys to the Lady Panthers’ lopsided victory was a balanced scoring attack led by junior Hayden Leggett, who scored 11 points. Junior Presley Frost added seven points, and sophomore Paige Yarbrough scored six points for M-CHS.

The Lady Panthers also benefited from an outstanding rebounding performance by junior Taelynn Comisky, who pulled down 11 total rebounds, six of which were offensive. Comisky, junior Malia Begay and senior Aryanna Silas also came through with three steals each.

The 17 points scored by Dolores was a season low for an M-CHS opponent and paid credence to head coach Tim Robinson’s seasonlong emphasis on defense. The Lady Panthers have now held opponents under 25 points three times this season.

Now 5-8 overall and 1-5 in the Intermountain League, M-CHS will prepare for a home matchup against Bayfield on Feb. 1. Dolores, which is now 5-8 overall and 3-4 in the SJBL, will play its next game against Norwood on Feb. 1.
