Why are we gouged, our taxes misspent?

I would just like to know if some of our local business folks in Cortez, who encourage all of us to shop local, could explain to all of us why gasoline prices are and, have been for weeks, over 50 cents per gallon higher than just 10 miles outside of Cortez.

Is paying this much extra for something giving us a good reason to shop local?

Another good reason to shop local would be the hardware and electrical supply businesses in Cortez. One good example that I can offer is a case of trying to purchase parts for florescent light fixtures. In Cortez, the part that I needed was priced at over $6 each. I bought the exact same part over the internet for 57 cents each, with no shipping charges and no tax.

I do know that shopping local generates tax dollars to support the city of Cortez and the city wants to tell us how worthwhile that is, but look at what they do with our money. How about a million dollars of our money for Main Street medians that will have a calming effect on traffic? How about another $50,000 so that the man who promoted the project could just relax and let someone else do his job?

Now, that is the way to spend our tax money and a good reason why we should shop local.
