I read with some interest about the announcement of the formation of the Committee for Civility in County Government (“Group for Montezuma County civility,” letters, Dec. 24).
We can surely agree that the traditional meaning of civility (formal politeness and courtesy in behavior or speech) among and between officeholders and the public, in print or verbally, is a good pattern of behavior.
Since I have attended some Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners meetings since 1994, and from 2009 to 2014 regularly, and most recently over the web, and have never witnessed incivility from any of the commissioners, I wondered what this could be about.
So I visited the blog site to investigate.
Since this is a new organization, I was not surprised to find little to go on – yet.
I did notice, however, that two members of the steering committee have been the most uncivil, disruptive and argumentative attendees I have ever witnessed at the regular board meetings.
So one is left to ponder what alternate definition of civility this committee will espouse.
