New interim superintendent of Dolores Schools Phil Kasper, joined in on the discussion of budget on June 20.

The search for a new Dolores School District superintendent is underway, with a special board meeting set for Monday that aims to engage community members, school board trustees and staff in the decision process.

The meeting will feature a visit from Jim Merriam, a representative from the Colorado Association of School Boards, who is leading the search process for the board. At Monday’s meeting, Merriam will establish focus groups to discuss the desired qualities for the new superintendent.

The new superintendent will replace current interim Superintendent Phil Kasper, who stepped in to replace Scott Cooper after he resigned in May to take a job at a large school district in Grand Junction.

Merriam will meet with staff members interested in providing input on the process at 4 p.m., community members at 5:30 p.m. and the school board at 7 p.m. in open session, where he is expected to discuss the full search process and offer a timeline for filling the vacancy.

The meeting is scheduled to take place in the professional development room, located in the large building northwest of the new district office at 100 N. Sixth St.
