The 2018 election was an important and positive time in Montezuma County.
Citizens participated by learning about the candidates, attending the six forums and voting. Turnout was “astronomical,” according to County Clerk and Recorder Kim Percell. Of 16,410 active registered voters, 11,711 cast votes in the county commissioner race.
Happily, what we citizens saw was a good race among four candidates who conducted themselves well and kept focus on the issues. Several times, at the forums, they praised each other for maintaining civility in the intense contest.
Civility, in elections and in the workings of government, is a key value in democracy – it invites citizen participation, which encourages good governance.
Civility, characterized by attentive listening without interruptions, means treating all ideas and every person with respect.
Inspired by the election, and wanting to ensure the continuation of citizen participation and civility in our county, we have formed the Committee for Civility in County Government (CCCG).
The CCCG organizes observers who will attend public meetings, especially the Board of County Commissioners.
Observers will listen, learn, take notes and occasionally report on their findings on our blog: cccgmontezuma.home.blog.
We encourage everyone, all citizens of Montezuma county of all political persuasions, to participate. Even if you can attend only occasionally, you will learn about your county government and your presence will encourage civility.
