Habitat for Humanity's mission in Montezuma County is to provide decent, affordable housing. The local Habitat affiliate is currently on the threshold of opening a resale store to help generate dollars to fund local housing projects. When Builders' Depot closed their doors, the Habitat board decided this was the right time to fill the gap by opening a Habitat for Humanity resale store. A building has been located - the old bridal shop next to Belt Salvage - and volunteers have spent time preparing the space for a spring opening.

Habitat needs a large initial donation of gently-used building materials, household goods, furniture and appliances to help fill the store. A complete list of desirable and unacceptable items can be found on Habitat's website at http://habitatmontezuma.org/.

Habitat is also looking for a flatbed cart, appliance or furniture dolly that could be used for moving heavy loads. Financial donations are also welcome to help offset start-up costs.

Donating items benefits the community in a number of ways: recycling means usable items can find a useful second life. Recycling also reduces the strain on the landfill; it allows others to improve their homes or fill a building need at a much reduced cost, and donations are eligible as a charitable donation. Best of all, donations will help the local Habitat raise funds to help people in the local community secure decent, affordable housing.
