Montezuma-Cortez High School had its boys basketball season end in heartbreaking fashion Tuesday night.

Tied at 52 late, Jack Kamby snared the offensive rebound for Battle Mountain, then laid it in with the foul. Kamby's free throw missed, but his put back was the difference maker.

The Panthers lost to Battle Mountain 54-52 in the pigtail round of the 4A Western District Tournament at Palisade High School.

M-CHS (6-14) was the No. 8-seed and led 9-seeded Battle Mountain (9-11) 31-24 at halftime in the 12-school tourney field. But the Huskies from Edwards clamped down on defense and won it in the end. Battle Mountain advances to the Elite Eight round of the tourney and faces top-seeded Durango tonight at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction.

The Panthers concluded their season with the loss.
