Forest service employees are your neighbors

Dear Editor:

I have never seen a more irresponsible collection of words published in the Cortez Journal than the “Sheriffs fear trouble” article published on Tuesday (March 8). It is incendiary and all but invites violence on forest service employees.

Sheriff Spruell has officially let the people in this county know that, should they be so angry about a dirt road being decommissioned that they feel the need to attack a forest service employee, well, shucks and darn it, if only that Forest Service employee hadn’t brought it upon themselves. Perhaps I can bring my two daughters down to the sheriff’s office so that he can explain to them why their daddy deserves to be attacked for going to work. The people in that forest service office are your neighbors and have the unenviable task of carrying out a top-down mandate set forth by the Bush administration to address travel management on the forest.

Shame on Sheriff Spruell for saying, and the Cortez Journal for printing, such irresponsible words.
