Paul Putnam speaking presentation
Learn what it takes to become a collegiate athlete from a recruiting expert. Paul Putnam, a nationally recognized speaker and college recruiting expert, will speak at the Montezuma-Cortez High School Auditorium on Tuesday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m. Putnam is the owner of BASICS sports medicine, where he oversees the training of world class, Olympic and NFL athletes. Cortez Splat tournament
The City of Cortez is sponsoring the seventh annual "Cortez Splat" racquetball tournament Jan. 24-27. It is featuring doubles, mixed doubles, and singles men and women. It's open A, B and C divisions. Cost to play is $20 for the first event registered and $10 each event after. T-shirts will be given to each participant and prizes will be awarded for division winners. Stop by the Cortez Recreation Center to register or contact Joye McHenry at 564-4080.
Little dribblers camp
The Montezuma-Cortez High School Lady Panthers little dribblers camp will take place Friday and Saturday, Feb. 1-2, at the M-CHS Main Gym. The camp is for kids kindergarten through fifth-grade, and runs from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Third through fifth graders participate 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. K-second-grade focus on ball handling and third- fifth-grade focus on shooting and team play. Performances by the campers will take place at halftime of the M-CHS girls and boys basketball games Friday, Feb. 8. Cost is $15 for K-second and $20 third-fifth. All participants will receive a program T-shirt and free admission to the games on Feb. 8. Registration will close on Friday, Jan. 25. Toss in the Tundra
The Toss in the Tundra disc golf tournament, benefiting WolfWood Refuge, will be on Saturday, Jan. 26, at Centennial Park in Cortez. Round 1 of 18 begins at 10 a.m. Sign up at the big gazebo from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. It's a $25 entry fee or a 20-pound bag of quality dog food, or volunteering for one hour at WolfWood, a state licensed non-profit refuge protecting wolves and wolf/dogs. Ute Mountain Rec. coed basketball
The Ute Mountain Recreation Center in Towaoc is taking registration for its men's 40-Older basketball league and tournament, and adult coed basketball league and tournament. Entry fee is $200 and it's a seven-game guarantee for an eight-player roster. League play starts Tuesday, Jan. 29. All games are played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Ute Mountain Rec. Special Olympics Rock Out music festival
On Jan. 26, at 6 p.m., the Cortez Special Olympics basketball team will hold its first ever Rock Out for Special Olympics musical festival. It's hosted at American Legion of Cortez, 320 North Harrison. Entry fee is $10, this covers dinner and live music. Bands playing are The Guys, Rhythm Method and Psyality. Dinner is provided by Domino's, Wendy's and McDonald's. This year, Cortez Special Olympics will not be receiving any help on the state level. Cortez's program is planning on attending a regional tournament in Grand Junction and a state tournament in Denver. A significant amount of money must be raised to pay for entry fees, hotels, food and transportation costs. There are 12 athletes that will be going to these events. Public donations are welcome and all donations are tax deductible. Special Olympics, Inc., is recognized as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Our Federal Tax ID number, or Employer Identification Number (EIN), is 52-0889518. After making a donation, in four to six weeks time, people will receive an official document from the Special Olympics central office in Denver confirming the monetary value of the donation for tax records. If interested in donating, people can send donations to Cortez Special Olympics Coordinator, Marcelino Aldaz, 13691 Road 28, Dolores, CO. 81323 (checks payable to Cortez Special Olympics).
