During what has been a roller-coaster like season thus far, the Mancos High School volleyball team has enjoyed a handful of big wins and its fair share of disappointing losses.

Unfortunately for the Lady Jays, a road matchup against Norwood on Oct. 12 fell in to the latter category as head coach Brittany Lang’s blue-and-white clad team was defeated, 18-25, 25-21, 13-25, 26-24, 15-8.

Leading the way for Mancos offensively in the back-and-forth match was senior Morgan Rose, who registered a team-high 13 kills and hammered down a team-best four aces. Junior Magdalena Halls was credited with 11 kills, and junior Isis Jaime had five kills. Sophomore Tia Imel led the Bluejays defensively with 17 digs, and senior Ericka Peacock performed admirably at the setter position and was credited with 35 assists.

Following up its loss to Norwood with a trip to Telluride on Oct. 13, the Lady Jays took on the Miners and lost, 25-15, 25-11, 25-16. Rose registered six kills in the match and Jaime, Peacock, and Halls were each credited with two kills.

The Lady Jays were led defensively by Peacock, who had 13 assists. Rose and Halls both made their presence felt at the net as they recorded three blocks and four blocks, respectively, and sophomore Jayma Schamp led Mancos in assists with 12.

Now 6-9 overall this season and 5-5 in the San Juan Basin League, the Lady Jays will return to action with a road matchup against Ridgway on Oct. 19, which will be followed by a home match against Ouray on Oct. 20.
