In response to a mean-spirited letter I saw in The Journal recently, I had planned to send a letter listing the many reasons I support MB McAfee for county commissioner: things like good character, qualifications, lifetime experience and service, listening skills, commitments to civility and transparency in government and to the natural beauty of the area, knowledge of the history and families here, stamina, patience, good ideas for economic opportunity, knowing how the county commission works, courage (to run for office in these times!), practical wisdom, compassion. I could go on and on, but instead, I thought people could use a laugh.
Here is an anecdote my sister shared with me a while back. Her daughter, who worked in Anchorage, Alaska, at the time, with her co-workers decided to go to lunch at a local eatery. It had been a long winter, and it was yet another dismal, gray, cold, wet day. Outside the establishment, she snapped a picture and sent it to my sister. It was a picture of the specials board, on which was written: “Soup of the day: whiskey.”
Lighten up, people?
