Free Amrit Yoga classes are being offered now through the end of the year to all Afghanistan or Iraq veterans and their families, announced Mimi Pribble Scott, certified Amrit yoga teacher. These classes are a way to honor the service of the brave men and women who have served our country.

The classes are held at The Cortez Cultural Center on Tuesdays from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. and on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the upstairs classroom. Each class includes a brief centering meditation at the beginning and at the end of class, as well as traditional yoga postures which enhance health and well-being. Instruction in yogic breathing, called Pranayama, is included.

Amrit Yoga is called The Posture of Consciousness by its founder and Mimi’s teacher, Yogi Amrit Desai. All veterans and spouses are welcome regardless of whether you have ever practiced yoga. The benefits of yoga and meditation include a healthier and calmer body and mind, enhanced immune system, greater flexibility and strength both on the mat and off the mat in your life. The yoga postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama) exercise every part of the body, muscles, joints, spine, organs, glands and nerves thus releasing tension and liberating energy to revitalize the body and mind, to clarify and bring calmness and improved concentration. Yoga is particularly beneficial to counteract the effects of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Students begin wherever they are. There is no competition with others or with your idealized picture of yourself.

Veterans are encouraged to take advantage of this offer by calling Mimi Scott 564-0100 or e-mailing ramamama2@gmail.com to register and to ask questions. Visit www.amrityoga.org/mimipribblescott.
