Although she is just 10 years old, Mesa Verde Aquatics Club team member Erin Lawrence already ranks as one of the most accomplished swimmers in the Cortez area. So it wasn’t surprising when the young standout traveled to Colorado Springs for the Colorado Long Course Age Group Championships, which took place July 27-29, and performed well.

Among Lawrence’s most impressive performances came in the 50-meter backstroke: She swam a lifetime best time of 40.27 seconds and placed 12th overall in the girls’ 10-and-under division. She also was 12th in the 100-meter freestyle with a lifetime best time of 1:15.92.

Other standout performances from Lawrence came in the 100-meter backstroke, where she placed 13th overall (1:28.59), and in the 50-meter freestyle, where she placed 14th overall (34.56). Lawrence also placed 26th in the 200-meter individual medley (3:18.80), 32nd in the 50-meter butterfly (40.65), and 40th in the 200-meter freestyle.

Lawrence earned 56.5 points, which were good enough to place the Mesa Verde Aquatics Club 31st overall in the meet. Forty-eight total teams scored in the competition, which took place at the Air Force Academy’s swimming pool and featured most of the state’s top swimmers under the age of 13.

With the summer portion of her season now complete, Lawrence will return to the practice pool to prepare for what figures to be a successful fall season during which she will compete in several meets across the state of Colorado.
