Fun at the Montezuma County Fair continued on Thursday with competitions and events for all ages throughout the day.
Rabbit and poultry shows, a three-legged mud race and chicken chases highlighted events early in the day, but in the late afternoon, beef shows took over.
The 4-H/FFA beef show took place before the open show, in which cattle from different classifications were judged before a panel.
A car show also was supposed to take place, and participants lined up their cars, though no readily apparent competition or judging occurred.
In the evening, lawnmower races around a short track in the outdoor arena warmed up the crowd before a concert that featured country artist Richie Law, a Georgia native who moved to the Denver area at age 7.
Partway through the show, four audience members hopped the fence that separated the stands from the arena, where Law and the band were set up, and started dancing, soon to be joined by kids and many others. The group kept up the energy, even showcasing line and square dancing.
Halfway through the concert, Law stopped to announce the 2018-2019 Fair Royalty, making the night special for the winning girls. The winners were: Queen Ashley Jeter, Queen Attendant Jessa Springer, Junior Queen Aunica Naranjo, Junior Queen Attendant Kylee Burt, Princess Taylor Garner, Princess Attendant Reanen Bauer, and Junior Princesses Emma Oaks and Bailey Bauer.
The concert made for a great end to a day filled with events, which is fair board member Erin Gordanier’s favorite part.
“I like seeing all the kids have fun,” she said. “We do so many different events, not just livestock shows but like chicken chases and the ATV rodeo and the gymkhana.”
The fair continues until Sunday, with the farmers market, rooster crowing and dummy roping contests, sack race and the livestock sale. The Ranch Rodeo caps the day’s events at 7 p.m.
