As dust flew through the air and the roar of the wind drowned out the roar of the engines, drivers circled the track at Fairgrounds Speedway on July 27 and July 28 with tight grips on their steering wheels and victory on their minds.

At times, the dust rose so high that cars were barely visible along the track’s back stretch, yet as cars roared past the grandstands, the majority of those in the near-capacity crowd clapped and cheered.

Clearly appreciating the support from those in attendance, several of the area’s finest drivers put everything on the line with an eye toward earning crucial points in the International Motor Contest Association series.

Among the winners from main event races on July 28 were Farmington resident and former Fairgrounds Speedway track promoter Regan Tafoya, who piloted his shiny Modified to an impressive victory.

Former Modified driver and longtime local driving icon Aaron Spangler finished first in the Stock Car division ahead of Race Fisher and Tony Hill, while Jason Duggins won the Hobby Stock race.

Robert Gallegos captured top honors in the Sport Mod division, while William Millard took top honors in Sport Compact A-Main, which featured five cars.

On July 27, Tafoya finished first in the Modified Division, and Spangler won the Stock Car race, while Paul Dorsett finished first in the Hobby Stock division, and Miles Morris took top honors in the Sport Mod division.

Robert Cody finished first in a Sport Compact race, which featured eight cars and ranked among the most well-attended Sport Compact races in recent memory

The next races at Fairgrounds Speedway will occur roughly one month from now when drivers will take to the track on Aug. 24 and Aug. 25 for two nights of what figures to be exciting racing.
