McHenry case continued to Jan. 9

The 43-year-old Cortez Middle School teacher accused of allegedly punching a Montezuma County sheriff’s deputy while trying to gain access to a blocked road to his property during the Roatcap Fire on Oct. 24 had his disposition case continued Tuesday afternoon.

John McHenry, who was flanked by numerous family and friends during his Tuesday court appearance, is charged with the felony charge of second-degree assault on a peace officer and the misdemeanor charges of obstructing government operations, resisting arrest and obstructing a peace officer.

Montezuma County Judge Jennilynn Lawrence set McHenry’s next court date for Jan. 9 at 1:30 in county court while a disposition to the case is being discussed.

McHenry was suspended from his position as the Dolores High School girls basketball coach after his arrest.
