A Durango Fire Protection District firefighter puts out hot spots inside the containment area of a quarter-acre fire Friday afternoon in the Rincon subdivision, east of Durango. Several small fires started as a result of lightning strikes in the County Road 228 area.

Several small lightning-caused fires started Friday afternoon near County Road 228, northeast of Elmore’s Corner in La Plata County.

“Most of them are single trees,” said Durango Fire Protection District Chief Hal Doughty.

Firefighters responded to at least four fires in the area, he said.

Firefighters built containment lines around the trees, and, in some cases, cut them down. They also monitored the area for additional fires.

An increase in humidity and daily storm cells helped prevent rapid spread, Doughty said.
