America Recycles Day is tomorrow (Nov. 15) and theres going to be a party to celebrate!
The fun and food will be hosted by the Four Corners Recycling Initiative (FCRI) and will be at Mr. Happys Bakery, Bar & Grill in Cortez on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m. There will be snacks, soft drinks, drink specials, information about recycling, and live music. The popular Durango band Jack 10 High will be playing both an acoustic bluegrass set and an electric rock set later in the night. The celebration is $5 for adults and kids are free.
FCRI was founded in March 2008 as a result of questions being bounced around the community Why dont we have any recycling facilities available to us? A few friends got together, brainstormed, put together a plan, and a grant was received from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) for $91,000. The Greater Dolores Action (GDA) was the fiscal agent. With those initial funds, FCRI purchased recycling containers and other recycling-related materials to use in Montezuma County. Then, in September of that year, the first roll-off bins were put at the Dolores School and the Dolores Public Lands Office. The bins have places for mixed metals, paper and cardboard to be brought by anyone and recycled. The bins are then taken to the Montezuma County landfill where they are distributed to various recycling places in the state.
As of January 2012, over 500 tons of recycled material has been diverted from the landfill, thanks to people who care about recycling and the earth.
More bins have been placed at the Mancos School and the Montezuma County landfill.
